Working to Support the Cabrera Trust and Woodland Walk

We are extremely fortunate to have 52 acres of tranquil woodland running adjacent to the Estate. The woodland is known as the Cabrera Trust through which the River Bourne flows and was named after Lady Cabrera who donated the land in 1961.

The area supports a diversity of habitats which are home to a large number of species of birds, mammals, insects, wild flowers and grasses. Many of the plant species are markers of ancient woodland. In recognition of this diversity, the site has been designated as a local nature reserve for some 30 years with a Riverside Trail along the river Bourne.

Until recently, the sole funding which supports this local natural resource was provided by an endowment to the Trustees (Runnymede Borough Council). The value of the fund is decreasing rapidly and will run out in the next few years. If there are insufficient funds to maintain this land the decision on its future will revert to central government and no longer be in the control of the local community. This wonderful oasis of calm and natural reserve could be lost to the community.

Many of you may have gone there to exercise yourself or your dogs and if you haven’t already visited, you are most welcome to stroll along the serene Riverside Trail in the heart of the village.

The Friends of Cabrera Trust and Woods (FCTW) was set up following a meeting of concerned Virginia Water residents held in early March 2023 and subsequently a committee was formed to plan and prepare the actions of the newly-formed group.

Their primary aim is to raise funds to help preserve and protect the Cabrera Trust Woods and Bourne Riverside Walk. They also organise volunteer work parties to assist with the maintenance of the woods. Money has been raised from donations from friends of FCTW, talks, walks and small donations from local businesses to cover the annual general maintenance costs of the woods. However, this will not cover major repair works.

The FCTW is starting a fundraising drive to raise money towards specific major repairs, the most pressing being the restoration of the two bridges over the river. The main bridge in particular is in danger of being closed if no action is taken. The estimated costs for the bridge repairs is £12,000.

The Wentworth Residents Association executive committee agreed to underwrite the cost of repairs to £5,000, which will allow the major bridge repair to be completed and remain open.
